What ‘failed payment’ should mean in your event dictionary
Ambiguous failure states leave finance reconciling journeys that analytics never admitted existed.
Product teams often emit a single payment_failed event for timeouts, insufficient funds, scheme declines, and user cancellations. Finance then cannot tell which failures should reverse an authorisation hold and which never left the app.
In App Analytics Reviews we ask engineering to split failure taxonomy until each state maps to a ledger expectation. That does not mean dozens of vanity events; it means enough precision for fintech transaction oversight to survive a regulator’s “show me the trail” question.
If your dictionary still collapses every unhappy path into one label, start there before buying another reporting layer.
